Deneka Thomas is an internationally recognised Poet, Writer, Arts Educator, and Activist from Trinidad and Tobago. She is the definition of “small axe cut down big tree” as she is often referred to as a performer who is small but who’s work packs a punch.
Deneka is the Program Manager of Girl Be Heard Trinidad and Tobago. She is a 2018 Woman Deliver Young Leader. She is a committee member on the Caribbean Regional Youth Council. She has been published in print and online a number of times and is currently working on her first collection of poems.
She is the 2018 National Grand Slam Defending Champion. Deneka uses the allure of metaphor and raw imagery to her performances while always finding new ways of addressing contemporary issues and personal experiences. She continues to expand her craft, outreach and continues to mentor and create spaces for upcoming young persons and activists in the area of advocacy, art intervention, and youth empowerment.
Deneka’s Teaching artistry career began when she started working with the 2 Cent’s Movement in 2014. She is a resident poet and Teaching Artist at The 2 Cents Movement. Her role has expanded and since then encompass mentoring youth through various Secondary School Poetry clubs which have been established in various schools across Trinidad and Tobago. Deneka’s passion for empowering young people through art and poetry led her to create and assist in the creation of curriculums, programs and youth outreach with various organisations.
Deneka hold’s an Associate Degree in Adult Education and Teaching. She is also currently studying Youth Development work and Management Studies.
As an advocate, Deneka is proud to lead one of the most upcoming female-led and serving organisations in her country. She has been the face of many campaigns and initiatives that promote equality and human rights. Her work is a mixture of advocating for women, LGBT rights, environmentalism and exploring culture and diaspora. She has married her passion for championing women's issues and love for the earth's ecology to create her personal brand of eco-feminism.
Deneka has been on 7 Youth Outreach Secondary School Tours with the 2 Cents movement performing for over 60,000 secondary schools Students cross Trinidad and Tobago. Some of the themes she has explored with youth are Violence Extremism, National Pride, Gender-Based Violence and Violence against Women and Environmental awareness.
